"Installed this Solarcan on Winter Solstice 2023,

"Installed this Solarcan on Winter Solstice 2023, intended to take it down at the Equinox, life got in the way. Planned to take it down at the winter Solstice, again this passed. Took it down today after 17 months on a piece of wood screwed to the eaves of the garage."

When life gets in the way and Solarcan are forgotten it's a really good way to get extra long exposures without losing patience while waiting. This sun soaked Solarcan shows that even with extra time there's still moments the sun doesn't shine here in the UK. Interestingly this capture has the mystery crystals starting to appear across it.

"I took my Puck to Switzerland with a couple of ex

"I took my Puck to Switzerland with a couple of exposures. The first attempt was stuck on the outside wooden wall of the chalet. I had to use plasters from my medical supply and blu tack. It eventually fell off after three days and when I looked at the image quickly, half of it was taken up by the chalet roof.
For the next attempt I secured it to the outside of the balcony using cord and toggles from my waterproof trousers wrapped around puck and the wooden slats. It stayed up and survived a big thunderstorm too. I was pleased the mountains from the Jungfrau range came out in the background."

Brian is a real advocate for Solarcan and has worked with many students in his local schools using Solarcan Puck to teach the students about science, astronomy, art and photography.

These Solarcan captures are from the schools he taught at, with each up for a few months.

The schools were Valley New School, McKinley Elementary School, Richmond Elementary School and Janet Berry Elementary.

We think this first attempt by Nadja is outstanding! The sun arcs beautifully over the buildings and cars; including one ghostly one in the foreground.

Each Puck comes with 9 exposures, meaning once you've finished exposing the first you can go again and again.

"I had gotten the stupidest vision in my mind that, if I took photos with two pucks separated at about normal eye spacing for the same amoung of time, it could be manipulated into a 3D image. So, after gluing two pucks to a surveyors stake that I had lying around after pouring a concrete slab for my greenhouse a couple of years ago, I set the two pucks up for a day of imaging in my stargazing backyard area, mindful to be close to a bough from my pecan tree. Then, I scanned them both in, converted both to greyscale, with the only spatial transformation being that I rotated and translated each such that the sun's path lined up (distance=infinity=superimposed). Voila, Monsieur Thibaut -- it is amazing that this actually works with red/cyan 3D glasses. I was stoked to see the final product -- get some glasses and take a peek!"

Absolutely love this experiment by Nathan and it works beautifully.

Even with the roof cutting off part of the frame this is a great capture; the house and garden in superb detail and the sun arcing down below it all.

Way back in 2017, photographer Don Hladiuk was the first community member to capture an eclipse in a Solarcan. We think he did a fabulous job!

"I have been setting up cans up for a few years now over a six month period and decided to try one for just one day on Aug 21 in Rexburg, ID.
The photographic paper was later scanned, the color inverted and image was flipped to place the rising sun on the left (east) as I saw it."

There is a solar eclipse on the 12th August with the total eclipse visible in Greenland, Iceland and Spain. A partial eclipse will be visible across most of Europe and North America. Is anyone out catching it?

Experiment Time

While making Solarcan one day I was thinking about water damage in results we see, caused by various environmental conditions. I wondered if you could use water in a controlled way to distort the chemicals on the paper intentionally.

To try this I used water to make a handprint of my son on the photographic paper. While not perfect the idea did work and could be refined and improved.

What do you think?

"We don't see many wildlife photos taken with a puck, so for the longest day I decided to have a go.
Front centre is the water dish on the bird table. Sadly no bird stayed around long enough to register.
Puck was taped to an L-bracket on the top of a tripod. A light orange filter was rubber-banded on, perhaps contributing the the contrast between sky and foreground elements"

Wol's experiment raises an interesting question. In a single day exposure what's the minimum time something would need to be stationary to be captured?

"Melt of the glacier. Every year, the same cycle. The glacier is melting. In spring, the glacier river is full of power and we can hear stones rolling bellow the bridge. In summer, the sun goes down and we can clearly see the valley that has been shaped by the glacier in 1860. In fall, the sun goes down and the temperature goes below zero, the river is almost dry. Incredible to be able to capture theses small change over the season!It's part of my project about melting glacier in Switzerland"

Some projects really stand out. This glacier project by Lionel is one of them, still a work in progress with Pucks out capturing the sun now, we're really excited to see the final collection of these images.

This two year exposure dropped our jaws! From the sun through the trees and the reflections off parked cars we can't deny it's beautiful.

Through being pregnant and having a now one year old I have a Solarcan that's been basking in the sun for 2 years.

"This is a 6-month long exposure photo taken with the Solar Can Puck. I aimed it facing south on the beach of the St. Croix River to capture the sun's path each day from December 26, 2023, to June 26, 2024. I intentionally exposed this photo from the winter solstice to the summer solstice to capture the sun's lowest and highest paths in the sky."

We think this Puck capture is pretty cool (especially the reflections in the river) and it seems the Minnesota State Fair agreed with us; accepting it into their Fine Arts Exhibition and earning an honourable mention for photography.
